The latest report released by global energy think tank Ember on Wednesday said that in 2023, with the growth of solar and wind energy around the world, the proportion of renewable energy generation in global electricity generation reached a record 30 percent.
Ember wrote in the report that renewables provided 30.3 percent of global electricity last year, up from 29.4 percent in 2022. The main reason behind this is the increased capacity of renewable energy projects, especially solar. This data means that the global goal of tripling renewable energy generation by 2030 is within reach.
According to the report, the global total solar power generation increased by 23.2% last year, while the total wind power generation increased by 9.8%. Notably, more than half of the world's new solar and wind capacity last year came from China.
Ember wrote in his report:
"China is the leading contributor [to new renewables] in 2023, accounting for 51 percent of global solar and 60 percent of global wind."
