Pros and Cons of Doing Your Laundry vs Using a Professional Service

It’s the calm time between Christmas and New Year and I’m starting to think about what I want to achieve in 2023 and how to stay organised. I definitely need to do a better job of staying on top of household chores next year so they don’t become an overwhelming full weekend activity. It’s amazing how even with just two of us, things like laundry mount up very quickly and the laundry basket is rarely empty. How do families manage?

I haven’t ever outsourced our laundry, but Pete did used to send his work shirts to the dry cleaners when we were younger and didn’t have a huge mortgage to repay. If you are used to doing the laundry yourself at home but planning to send it to a laundry service provider, here are some pros and cons of doing it yourself or with a professional service.

Let’s start with the advantages:

• Cost savings: Doing your laundry can save you money compared to using a laundromat or hiring someone.
• When you do your laundry; you have control over the process. You can choose your detergent, wash temperature, and drying method, which can help to protect your clothes and extend their lifespan.
• Doing your laundry can be more convenient because you can do it on your schedule. This can be especially helpful if you have a busy schedule and don’t have time to drop off and pick up your laundry from a launderette.

And now, what isn’t so great about this task:

• Doing laundry can be time-consuming, especially if you have a lot of clothes or a large family.
• If you don’t have your washing machine and dryer, you may have to go to a launderette or use a shared laundry room – I certainly remember this from my student days and when I first moved to London and my bedsit was too small for a washing machine. This adds extra time on to the task which needs to be factored in.
• Having limited expertise or experience with laundry, you may not know the best way to treat different types of stains or fabrics. This can lead to clothes being damaged or not getting as clean as they could.

Doing laundry yourself can give you a sense of accomplishment and contribute to a feeling of independence. But if you need validation of hiring a laundry pickup and delivery service, then read on!

Delegating your laundry to a professional has several advantages:

• Hiring a professional laundry service can save you time because you won’t have to do the laundry yourself. This can be especially helpful if you have a busy schedule and can make better use of the time.
• Professional laundry services like Whites Laundry & Dry Cleaning have the expertise and equipment to handle a variety of fabrics and stains. They can often get your clothes cleaner and fresher than you could on your own.
• Delegating your laundry to a professional service can be convenient because you don’t have to worry about picking up and dropping off your clothes. Some services even offer pickup and delivery, so you don’t have to leave home.
• Professional laundry services often use high-quality detergents and fabric softeners, which can leave your clothes smelling fresh and feeling soft.

But it may not be the right choice for you, here are some reasons why:

• Professional laundry services will likely be more expensive than doing the laundry yourself.
• You lose control over the process when you delegate your laundry to a professional service. This means that you may not be able to specify exactly how you want your clothes to be washed and dried.
• You always risk your clothes being damaged or lost when you entrust them to someone else. While professional laundry services are generally careful with your clothes, accidents can happen.

I’m not yet convinced that outsourcing this bit of housework is for me, but never say never! If we won the lottery then I’d definitely think about it 😉
