Natural gas must be compressed to a pressure of between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds per square inch (psi) to be suitable for automotive use, while gases like gasoline or propane are stored in low-pressure tanks. As a result, LNG vehicles require heavier and stronger cylinders to withstand the pressure and maintain the gas in liquid form.

In addition to the physical differences between LNG and traditional fuel tanks, there are specific safety requirements and regulations that must be adhered to when using LNG cylinders in transport. Regulatory authorities such as the US Department of Transportation (DOT) state that all cylinders must be manufactured, tested, and certified to withstand the extreme pressures and temperatures required for storing LNG.

When compared to traditional fuels, LNG provides various benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions and improved air quality. But to carry out these benefits that LNG has to offer, we need a safe and reliable storage system.
