How to make makeup products at home?

02 Apr.,2024

Making your own DIY makeup is easy, enjoyable, and far better for your skin than anything you can buy in-store. So ditch the chemicals and go for homemade!

Take your pick from this collection of DIY makeup recipes and give one a go. Which one will you try first?

I’m the biggest advocate for DIY makeup! And for many reasons.

Namely, homemade makeup is far better for your health and your skin than any of the chemical-filled items you can buy in-store.

Also, it’s often cheaper to make your own DIY natural makeup than it is to buy it!

You’ll find that DIY makeup can be tailored to suit your skin type, depending on whether you have oily, dry, regular, or combination skin.

You can alter the ingredients to match your skin tone better too.

Making your own DIY natural makeup is also great fun. I love getting my kids involved in mixing and measuring the ingredients; it’s a superb way to spend an afternoon.

In this post, I’m sharing my favorite DIY makeup recipes to inspire you to give them a go too!

Some take a little more effort than others, but all are great and work well on all skin types.

My best tip? Make sure you follow the recipes to get the best results.

How to make your own makeup

Getting started with DIY makeup takes a little preparation, but that’s it. Once you have the ingredients, it’s pretty easy, and you’ll love your homemade creations!

My best advice is to read through the recipes well in advance, so you can note down the ingredients you need and get them ahead of time.

Also, I recommend sticking to one recipe at a time. Don’t go overboard and try making too much at once, as you may lose interest too quickly.

Best to make what you need, in my opinion, then try it for a few days to see if it works (and do so with one homemade makeup item at a time.)

Concealer

Let’s start with the basics. Matching your concealer to your skin tone is essential! This is why making your own DIY version is a fab idea.

Simply follow my instructions in this recipe to get the right shade for you, and as a bonus, minimize the nasties (aka toxins) in your makeup simultaneously.

Eyebrow gel

A tint and tamer in one? I know, sounds too good to be true, but it is that good!! I love this budget-friendly eyebrow gel to keep brows looking neat and luscious.

It lasts throughout the day, too, so no need to top it up (unless you want to, of course!)

Eye shadow

It’s great fun making homemade eye shadow – you can be as creative as you like with colors and shades!

And it’s really up to you whether you make pressed eye shadow in a palette or pop it in a pot! What will you choose?

Eyeliner

Of all the nontoxic makeup out there, eyeliner is one you want to be pure and chemical-free, right?! That is, with NO toxins!

It gets applied to the more sensitive parts of the eye, making it even more important that whatever you use is kind to your skin.

Make sure to visit this post to make a nontoxic eyeliner that contains just three ingredients.

Facial toner

There is no limit to natural skin care products that can be made at home! I love making my own facial toner because I can tailor the ingredients depending on my skin’s behavior.

In summer, I need more of an astringent toner to soak up excess oil, and in winter, I need the opposite – moisture! Take a look at the recipe here.

Foundation

Don’t be put off by thinking it’s too hard to make a foundation from scratch! It might take a few attempts to get the shade right, but afterwards, you’ll never return to a store-bought foundation.

And who hasn’t had to buy several shades before finding the right one?! So you may as well make it yourself and save yourself some money.

Lip gloss

Packed full of moisturizing ingredients which are natural and nurturing to the core, this lip gloss not only adds tint and shine but cares for your lips, too, leaving them soft and nourished.

Great for all seasons! Make sure you check out the recipe here.

Lipstick

You’ll find that one of the most remarkable things about natural makeup is that not only are the ingredients chemical-free, but they also contain fewer ingredients in total.

This lipstick recipe has only five ingredients that not only add that desired color (which you get to choose!) but also moisturize your lips!

I absolutely love this recipe!

Lip Liner

A lip liner is an essential makeup item used to add definition, shape, and volume to the lips.

Different colors of lip liner can be used to enhance natural colors, create visual contrast, or simply define the outer edges of the lips.

Adding a pop of color along with a complementary lipstick will give your look that extra wow factor!

Mascara

If you’ve ever wondered what nasty ingredients are hiding in your mascara, read this post! You’ll be grateful you did.

And then, go and make your own natural, homemade mascara that is chemical-free and doesn’t smudge using the recipe I’ve created.

Setting spray/setting powder

Setting spray is one of my best recipes. I only realized how much it was missing from my beauty routine after I tried it!

It helps your makeup look better from the get-go and prolongs its longevity, helping stop smears and keeping you looking fresh all day.

The only question is, which one will you make; Setting spray or setting powder?

Makeup remover

If you’re tired of makeup removers that dry out your skin, you’ll love this DIY makeup remover recipe.

It cleanses, cleans, and softens, including the delicate eye area, and most importantly, leaves your skin makeup free after a long day, which is very much needed to keep the skin healthy.

Tips

My top tip is to follow each recipe word-for-word, particularly when starting out. So long as you stick to the instructions, you won’t go wrong!

Also – if it does go wrong, don’t panic! See it as an experience more than anything and enjoy the process. You can always try again and again.

I find making my own skincare and makeup products relaxing and enjoyable. I love doing it!

And, of course, the benefits of using your own homemade makeup are great too. No more chemicals – simply kind, nurturing ingredients on your skin.

I hope you enjoy these recipes as much as I do. I love hearing from you; do let me know which of these recipes you decide to make and how it goes!

I don’t wear makeup that often. When I do wear makeup, I like to use non-toxic makeup made without harsh chemicals.

I have sensitive skin that’s prone to breakouts and when I wear makeup from the drugstore my face can break out pretty bad. Once I stopped wearing makeup I found that my skin stayed clear. I was afraid to wear makeup for a long time but then I did some research and found that natural mineral makeup isn’t harsh and can be worn by people like me with sensitive skin.

I gave it a try and found that my skin does well with natural makeup. Since I don’t wear makeup often I’ve decided to make my own and save money! What I love most about making my own natural makeup is that I know exactly what’s in my makeup. Most of the ingredients used are edible!
